Jessica N. McKinney, Attorney

_MG_7314Jessica McKinney has represented debtors in bankruptcy for nearly ten years.  Jessica grew up in Western Wisconsin and went to college at the UW-Madison in the 1980s. Since that time she worked in Human Resources and later ran her own home construction and art business. Later she returned to law school. While in law school, she worked with ACORN housing and assisted persons with credit repair in an effort to prepare them for HUD sponsored home purchasing programs. After graduation, Jessica opened her own practice in St. Paul.  Jessica has a passion for helping people solve problems.  She feels honored to be able to assist people make their lives better and gain a new lease on life.


While attending Hamline Law School, Jessica wrote for the Hamline Law Review. She has presented at the Minnesota “Bankruptcy Institute” sponsored by Minnesota Continuing Legal Education in October of 2008. She and her co-panelists Clint Cutler of Frederickson and Byron and David Sasseville of Lindquist and Vennum presented on the topic of Attorney Ethics and Accountability under the Bankruptcy Protection Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BAPCPA).  In 2010, Jessica was a co-presenter with Chief Judge Kishel and John Lamey, III at the Annual Pro Bono Committee seminar on bankruptcy basics entitled “That’s the Stuff you Gotta Watch:  Avoiding Missteps in Representing Consumer Debtors Under Chapter 7.  At the 2012 Bankruptcy Institute, Jessica moderated a Panel of Speakers discussing fraudulent transfers, preferences and other consumer hot topics.  She has sat on several panels discussing various aspects of Consumer Bankruptcy Law for new lawyers.

As President election of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Section, Jessica is currently chairing the Planning Committee for the Bankruptcy Section’s 2013 Bankruptcy Institute.  Jessica has been an officer of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Section for four years and is the first exclusively consumer bankruptcy attorney to hold this position.

Memberships and Committees

Jessica is currently the incoming Chair of the Bankruptcy Section of the Minnesota Bar Association  for 2012-2013.  Before serving as Chair, Jessica served the Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Section as Educational Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary and Vice Chair. This year she in her capacity as Chairperson she has the honor of chairing the Planning Committee for the 2013 Bankruptcy Institute.   Jessica is also a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and she participates in the local Bankruptcy Pro Bono Committee.

Justin is from Waunakee, Wisconsin and joined Jessica in the summer of 2012.  He attended Augustana University.  Justin is capable and friendly and is happy to answer your questions and assist you in any way he is able when Jessica is not available.  He can help schedule an initial consultation and answer some of the basic questions you may have.  He is the first person you talk to when you call Jessica’s office.
